Welcome to "Ask the White House". This online interactive forum, the first of its kind in politics, allows you to interact with Bush administration officials and friends of the White House.

Launched in April 2003, citizens have participated in over 400 online discussions with Cabinet Secretaries, Senior White House Officials, behind-the-scenes professionals at the White House, and others.

Transcripts of every live chat session are available on this page. If you would like to suggest a participant to appear on Ask the White House, click here.

 OCTOBER

October 18, 2006
Alberto Gonzales, Attorney General

The Military Commissions Act guarantees that every terrorist will receive a full and fair trial, consistent with America’s obligations under international and domestic law. At the same time, this new law protects the sources and methods used to collect our most sensitive national intelligence. These procedures—which resulted from extensive deliberations among policymakers in both the Executive and Legislative branches—protect the rights of accused terrorists and the safety of the American people.

Clay Johnson, Deputy Director for Management, Office of Management and Budget

Citizens and taxpayers should hold the Federal government, Congress and the Executive Branch, accountable for spending their money effectively. The Federal government is developing the management skills it needs to be held accountable for delivering high levels of service. The "M" or Management part of OMB has been working aggressively to help agencies develop clearer performance targets for each program, and better people, financial, cost, and investment management skills with which to achieve those targets. So you should expect the government to be more effective.

Michael Johanns, Secretary of Agriculture

Good afternoon. I join you from the America Center in St. Louis, MO, where the Departments of Energy and Agriculture have convened a major conference to advance the promise of renewable energy.

October 10, 2006
Margaret Spellings, Secretary of Education

Good afternoon. I’m glad to join all of you today and answer your questions. One of the issues on all of our minds right now is school safety. Our country has seen terrible and senseless violence in our schools in recent weeks, and our heart goes out to the families and communities who are coping with these tragedies.

October 4, 2006
Stephen L. Johnson, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Thank you for joining me. This is my first opportunity to participate in an “Ask the White House” forum, and I’m excited to discuss Bush Administration’s efforts in promoting clean and dependable energy solutions.

October 2, 2006
Samuel Bodman, Secretary of Energy

Good afternoon. Thanks for logging in to Ask the White House. First off, I’d like to let everyone know that October is Energy Awareness Month. Our website, http://www.energysavers.gov/ provides useful information to help all Americans save energy in your home, business, vehicle, or industrial plant and I encourage you to take a look. This is part of the President's comprehensive, long-term energy strategy that promotes research, development and commercialization of clean, reliable, and renewable energy sources to strengthen our economic and national security.
