Government Oversight

Q: How does an IG contribute to good government?

A:

  • A principal focus of IG work is prevention: identifying weaknesses in systems, rules, and practices as the basis for recommending ways for management to avoid potential problems and enhance agency results.
  • IGs investigate and work with the Department of Justice to prosecute criminal misconduct related to government programs and operations.
  • They issue fact-filled reports based on professional audit, investigative, and inspection standards.
  • They can perform independent investigation of allegations, as requested by the agency head.
  • IGs maintain Hotlines for employees and others to report confidential information regarding allegations of fraud and abuse.

IGs also provide technical and consultative capabilities as systems, processes, pre-award contracts and other projects are being developed or established. For example, IGs provided substantial support to agency Year 2000 (Y2K) efforts, and continue to do so for Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) analyses, and Government Information Security Reform Act (GISRA) reviews.
