INSPECTORS GENERAL
This material was developed by the President's Council on Integrity and Efficiency.
The modern civilian Inspector General (IG) was derived from the military custom of having an "Inspector General" independently review the combat readiness of the Continental Army's troops. In October 1978, the Congress passed and the President signed the Inspector General Act, which created independent IGs with audit and investigative authority within 12 Federal agencies. Today, 57 IGs provide oversight to 59 agencies.
Additional information can be found on the IG Community's web site at
www.ignet.gov. An article, "An Introduction to the Inspector General Community," featured in The Journal of Public Inquiry, Special Edition Fall/Winter 2000, which provides a more detailed look into the IG roles,
responsibilities, and relationships with agency management and the Congress, is available on this site.
