- BILL TITLE: Omnibus Indian Advancement
Act
- BILL PURPOSE: (1) Establishes the American Indian Education Foundation; (2)
Ratifies a 1996 agreement that settles claims for losses on Torres Martinez Desert
Cahuilla Indian trust lands; (3) Provides new authorities and mechanisms to address
various concerns associated with native American and native Hawaiian housing; (4)
Provides federal recognition for the Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and the Graton Racheria
Tribe of California; and (5) Contains miscellaneous provisions relating to other Indian
tribes.
- OMB ESTIMATE: P.L.106-568 provides
for the settlement of claims entered into by the
Department of Justice, the Imperial Irrigation District, the Coachella Valley Water
District, and the Torres-Martinez Dessert Cahuilla Indian Tribe. Under the agreement,
the Tribe receives payment from the Judgment Fund. The bill also eliminates the
requirement to repay loans for expert assistance.
