Floodlights turned the north side of the the White House pink on the evening of Oct. 7, 2008 to raise awareness about breast cancer. The unique view of the North Portico facing Lafayette Park was to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer awareness is a cause for which Mrs. Laura Bush has worked to motivate both public and private sectors, worldwide, as as she has encouraged collaborative research to find a cure. The World Health Organization says each year more than 1.2 million people worldwide are diagnosed with it and breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death for women.
