President George W. Bush and Mrs. Bush announce the Healthier US initiative on the South Lawn of the White House June 20. As part of the initiative, President Bush signed two executive orders and named Football Hall of Famer Lynn Swann as Chair and Olympic Gold Medalist in Softball Dot Richardson as Vice Chair to the President's Council on Physical Fitness. Touring the exhibits, President Bush takes a few moments to visit with children at the hiking/outdoor activity exhibit.
White House staffers, visiting senior citizens and school-bus-loads of children filled the South Lawn by playing games and getting hands-on experience with the four principles of the Healthier US initiative: Be physically active every day; Eat a nutritious diet; Get preventive screenings; and Make healthy choices. As some tried their luck punting with the Washington Redskins, others took some kicks from gold medalist Mia Hamm at the soccer exhibit. With more than a dozen exhibits on hand, fitness fair visitors could try their skill at rock climbing, basketball, pitching, batting and a host of other activities.
Led by White House trainer Trish Bearden, White House staffers demonstrate their near-infinite flexibility. Accompanied by the Governor of Florida, his brother Jeb Bush, President George W.
