A regional trading center, Petra prospered from the first century BCE until the first century AD, when it fell to the Romans in 106 AD. Mrs. Laura Bush tours the Petra Church with Dr. Barbara Porter, Director of the American Center for Oriental Research, during a walk through the ancient city that included homes, a temple, an amphitheater and royal tombs. The church was discovered in 1973 by an American archeologist. It's estimated that the church was built in the fifth century and included three apses. The mosaic tile covered both church's side aisles.
