Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing |
Patrick OBrien was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing in October 2005. Prior to assuming this position, Mr. OBrien spent over four years in various positions at the Department of Justice. From September 2004 until joining the Treasury Department, Mr. OBrien served as a Senior Counsel in the Office of the Deputy Attorney General at the Department of Justice. In that capacity, he worked on a variety of counterterrorism issues, including terrorist financing, and served as the Justice Department representative to the Terrorist Financing Policy Coordinating Committee.
From January 2003 until September 2004, Mr. OBrien served as Counsel to the Director at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Prior to that, Mr. OBrien was the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs at the Department of Justice.
Before joining the Justice Department in 2001, Mr. OBrien worked in a variety of federal and private sector positions. From 1999 to 2001 he served as a counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee for Chairman Orrin G. Hatch. Prior to that, he was an Associate Independent Counsel under the Independent Counsel Kenneth W. Starr. Mr. OBrien was also in private practice in his home town of Minneapolis, Minnesota at the law firm of Leonard, Street & Deinard. Before joining the law firm, he was a law clerk for the Honorable Diana E. Murphy in the Federal District of Minnesota. Mr. OBrien received his bachelors degree from the University of Notre Dame and his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School.
Mr. OBrien is married, and he and his wife have two daughters. |
