Appointee Directory View:   Dennis Schrader -- Department of Homeland Security Deputy Administrator for National Prepardness, Federal Emergency Management Agency Dennis Schrader currently serves as Deputy Administrator of the National Preparedness Directorate (NPD), a component of FEMA that was established on April 1, 2007 to oversee the coordination and development of the capabilities and tools necessary to prepare for all hazards, including terrorism. The NPD provides strategy, policy, and planning guidance to build prevention, protection and recovery capabilities. Prior to this assignment, Mr. Schrader was Director of the State of Maryland Governor's Office of Homeland Security. As Maryland's first Director of Homeland Security, he is credited with the initial establishment of the office, as well as introducing efforts to improve interoperable communications and advance information sharing capabilities within the state. During his tenure, he was a member of several homeland security committees, including: the Anti-Terrorism Advisory Council of Maryland; Public Safety Communications Interoperability Governance Work Group; Homeland Security Senior Policy Group; and Maryland Pandemic Influenza Coordinating Committee. Previously, Mr. Schrader spent 16 years at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where his leadership posts included Director of Operations, Vice President of Facilities Management and Development and Vice President of Project Planning and Development. At the Center, his work included development of medical preparedness plans for mass casualty incidents. He has been publicly credited with transforming the University of Maryland Medical Center into its current status as a prominent, nationally recognized institution. Mr. Schrader began his professional career as a U.S. Navy Civil Engineers Corps officer and he served tours in Guam, Diego Garcia, and Sicily. He remained on active duty until 1987 and on reserve status until 2006. He retired from the Navy with the rank of Captain. A native of Buffalo, NY, Mr. Schrader received his B.A. from Kettering University with a focus in engineering, and M.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He resides in Columbia, MD with his wife Sandra and their daughter, Whitney.
