- LAW NUMBER: P.L.107-37 (H.R. 2882)
- BILL TITLE: Expedited Payment for Heroic Public Safety Officers
- BILL PURPOSE: Provides for expedited payments of certain benefits for public safety officers who were killed or suffered catastrophic injuries as a direct and proximate result of a personal injury sustained in the line of duty in connection with the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001.
- OMB ESTIMATE: Under current law, the Public Safety Officer's Benefits program provides one-time benefits to the eligible survivors of public safety officers whose deaths are the direct and proximate result of a traumatic injury sustained in the line of duty. Disability benefits are provided to public safety officers who have been totally disabled in the line of duty. The disability benefits are subject to the availability of funds being provided in appropriations acts. Under P.L. 107-37, disability benefits for those injured in the September 11th attack will not be subject to appropriations action. OMB estimates that an additional $8 million in disability payments will be made as a result of the Act.
